Ross & Cromarty
The County of Ross & Cromarty was an amalgamation, in 1890, of the former counties of Cromarty and Ross. The united county extended from the Moray Firth in the east to the Outer Hebrides in the Atlantic, to the west. The county also contained the burghs of Cromarty, Dingwall, Fortrose, Invergordon, Stornoway and Tain; and many inhabited islands, including Lewis (but not Harris). Ross & Cromarty County Council was established by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889, uniting the two former counties, and taking over powers from the respective Commissioners of Supply, Road Trusts, and other local authorities of each county. The County Council was abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973, and the former county was divided between Highland Region and the Western Isles. The current local authorities are the Highland Council and Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council).
