Parliaments

Scotland had a parliament (consisting of 'three estates' of clergy, nobility and burgesses) from the mid-thirteenth century until 25 March 1707. From 1 May 1707 (under article III of the Treaty of Union) Scotland sent representatives to the United Kingdom parliament at Westminster in London. In 1999 a devolved parliament was set up in Edinburgh with control over all government functions relating to Scotland except those reserved by the Westminster parliament.

Parliamentary Records
The records of the Scottish Parliament abolished in 1707 are held mainly by the National Archives of Scotland. The records of the Westminster Parliament are held by the Parliamentary Archive (formerly the House of Lords Record Office). The records of the Scottish parliament from 1999 will pass to the National Archives of Scotland, but many of the minutes and other documents issued by the parliament can be consulted online via the Scottish Parliament website.
