Since 1991 the site of a Buddhist community. Sometimes known as Holy Isle, and formerly known as Eilean Molaise, or its corruption, Lamlash. From 1830 the name Holy island gained currency to differentiate it from the village of Lamlash on the island of Arran. Locations
Locations of settlements (including burghs)
are National Grid References or (for offshore islands) degrees and
minutes of longitude and latitude. Locations given are approximate.
Those prefixed by a question mark are places which have not been
traced accurately but in many cases a rough location has been attempted.
In some cases these have been taken
from published works. In others, attempts have been made to find
the occurrence of the name in Ordnance Survey maps. A grid reference
is in the form of the letter code which relates to a 100Km square
section of the National Grid, and four digits, which relate to the
nearest lines of easting and northing, e.g. NM4087 relates to section
NM and the lines 40 east and 87 north.
