Stirling County
Stirling County (or 'Stirlingshire') was a county in central Scotland which underwent significant changes in boundaries and jurisdictions, and this has had an impact on the location of historical records relating to the area. The county also included the burghs of Alva, Bridge of Allan, Denny & Dunipace, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Kilsyth, Milngavie and Stirling; and the inhabited island of Inchfad. Stirling County Council was established by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889, taking over powers from the Commissioners of Supply, County Road Trust, and other local authorities. In 1891 the Boundary Commissioners rearranged the boundaries between Stirlingshire and the adjoining counties of Clackmannan, Perth and Dunbarton. The County Council was abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973, and the former county was divided between Central Region and Strathclyde Region. Areas of the former county are currently administered by Stirling Council, Falkirk Council East Dunbartonshire Council and North Lanarkshire Council.
