Sheriffdoms
Historical records of sheriff courts pass
to the National Archives of Scotland. For further details go to

Tracing Your Scottish Ancestors (HMSO, 1990). The following
sheriff courts operated in Inverness-shire:

Portree
Lochmaddy
Justice of the Peace records
Surviving Justice of the peace records for
Inverness-shire are held by the National Archives of Scotland.
Registers of sasines and sasine abridgements
Registers of sasines for Inverness-shire
are held by the National Archives of Scotland (RS.36-38). Sasine
abridgements for Inverness-shire are held by the National Archives
of Scotland (for 1781-1979) and the Highland Council Archive (for
1781-1970).
