Location of historical records

County Council records
The records of Dumfries County Council and its predecessors are held by Dumfries & Galloway Archives (Dumfries Archive Centre and Ewart Library) in various locations throughout Dumfries and Galloway.

County Constabulary records
The records of Dumfries County Constabulary are partly held by Dumfries & Galloway Archives and the remainder should be deposited in due course.

Valuation Rolls
Assessors’ rolls Dumfriesshire for the period 1855 to 1975 are held by the National Archives of Scotland. Ewart Library, Dumfries holds valuation rolls for the period 1864 to 1975.

Medical Officer of Health Reports
Annual reports of the Medical Officer of Health for the County of Dumfries are held, for the period 1891-1930, by the National Archives of Scotland.

Vehicle Licensing records
Records for Dumfries County Vehicle Licensing Authority are held partly by Dumfries & Galloway Council Archives and partly by the Kithead Trust, Droitwich Spa (for further details see the Knowledge Base entry on Vehicle Licensing).
