Epidemic Diseases in Aberdeen and the History of the City Hospital

This volume traces the history of infectious diseases in Aberdeen, from the first recorded outbreak of plague to recent trends in the incidence of AIDS. Dr Porter and Dr Williams provide a colourful history of the City Hospital, built in the 1870's, covering dramatic events, including a controversial accident in 1887, and the Aberdeen typhoid outbreak of 1964. An account is also given of the work of dedicated Medical Officers of Health such as Matthew Hay and Ian MacQueen. The authors describe a pioneering iron lung built in 1933, the work of the regional laboratory, facilities for the treatment of venereal diseases and tuberculosis, and many other aspect of the struggle to protect the health of Aberdeen's citizens.

This volume is based upon papers on local medical history given at a conference held during Aberdeen University's Quincentenary year. The eight chapters cover such diverse topices as medical education, David Skene and women's health, nineteenth-century surgery, cardiac physiology, occupational therapy, the Rowett Research Institute, medical sociology, and the evolution of medical imaging.

The title of this book is taken from a work which is generally attributed to Gilbert Skeyne, the first physician to write in the Scottish vernacular: Ane breif descriptioun of the qualiteis and effectis of the well of the woman hill besyde Abirdene (1580).
