The Scottish Archive
Network, in cooperation with IT staff from the
National Archives of Scotland, maintains the
following websites:
www.scan.org.uk
The website you are
currently in, which contains SCAN's electronic
catalogue, a suite of research tools (such as
the Glossary, Knowledge Base, Gazetteer, Currency
Converter, and Family History Guide)
www.scottishdocuments
.com
Until June 2005 Scan's
e-commerce website provided free access to the
index to wills and testaments of Scots from
1500 to 1901 and the opportunity to order high
quality digital images of the documents by e-mail.
This service is now operated by www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk.
The Scottish Documents website will be redeveloped
in the near future.
www.scottishhandwriting.com
A website providing tuition
in palaeography (reading old handwriting) for
those studying Scottish historical records between
1500 and 1800.
SCAN also maintains
websites for specific archives and archive-related
bodies, such as North Highland Archive, the
Friends of Dundee City Archives, the Scottish
Records Association and the Stair Society. Some
of these contain useful indexes, transcripts
and digital versions of historical records.

sites with links

Site maintenance is
carried out by a very small team of SCAN staff,
which also responds to enquiries relating to
the sites. While the team will respond readily
and promptly to e-mails, telephone calls and
letters concerning the websites and any information
contained within them, it does not have the
time or resources to undertake historical or
genealogical research. When contacting
SCAN please remember
that any time spent answering enquiries which
do not relate to Scan's work is time lost in
digitising and indexing historical records,
or adding to the electronic catalogue and website
content.
